(Course Objectives and Contents) :
1. The purpose of this course is to discuss the current status and limitations of the structure and function of various animal groups, with evolution as the core theme. Starting from the ears of an elephant, we will explore questions such as why humans have a fish-like structure and why zebras don't get ulcers. The evolution of the human body and the emergence of diseases from jungle to civilization represent different trajectories of biological and cultural evolution. For example: How does spider silk form? What is echolocation in bats? Why are freshwater shrimp the strongest osmoregulators on land? If your skin were like that of a pufferfish, would applying a face mask be effective?
2. To establish fundamental concepts in animal physiology, including the concept of homeostasis and the mechanisms of positive and negative feedback regulation. Building upon the content of human physiology, we will discuss the operation of various physiological mechanisms and reinforce these concepts with examples from various animals. After exploring each physiological system, students will acquire a basic understanding of physiology and develop the ability to comprehend articles related to physiology in popular science magazines such as Scientific American.
* Textbook ordering is required during the summer break.
(Muliti-Teaching Methods) :
In addition to classroom lectures and exams, this course may incorporate the following teaching methods throughout the semester to further enhance students' learning outcomes.
(Textbooks and References):
Hill, R.W., G.A. Wyse, and M. Anderson. 2018. Animal Physiology. 4th edition. Sinauer, MA, USA.
Due to the pandemic, it takes 4-6 weeks to order books from overseas bookstores, with each book costing approximately 3500 NT dollars. I have suggested that the library purchase 15 copies, which are expected to arrive before the start of the semester and will be available for students to borrow.
Although the price is quite high, this is currently one of the best "Animal Physiology" textbooks globally. If you are interested in animal physiology, please consider placing an order. You can schedule a time with the teacher (hclin@thu.edu.tw) to come to my office and review the textbook before deciding whether to order. Please contact me no later than July 5th if you need to place an order. In the future, you can also resell the textbooks to the next generation of students to continue use.
